Fungi are a fact of life that are present on every human body on planet earth. It’s only when they find conditions ripe for growth that they reach problematic numbers and an infection is born. Feet stuffed into sweaty or wet socks and shoes are ideal candidates for a nail fungus infection, also known as onychomycosis. With onychomycosis fungi gradually move in and take up residence in the toenails and surrounding tissue. It’s a slow motion invasion that a patient may not even notice for several months. It also happens to the fingernails, just not as often. Ignoring onychomycosis is not a smart thing for any patient to do. Below we’ll get into the reasons why that is as well as why the Lunula nail fungus laser treatment machine is the best treatment yet devised for this condition.

Causes of Onychomycosis
Whether your patient discovered the nail infection on their own or you discovered it for them they’re going to have questions. Primary among these will be “How did this happen?” and “What can be done?” The most effective treatment for onychomycosis is the Lunula nail fungus laser machine. And as far as causes go there are a number of possibilities, including:
- Showers that are shared by many people such as those at a health club or public swimming pool.
- Having one’s nails done at a salon that does a poor job sterilizing their equipment.
- If a loved one has a nail infection it may be passed on by sharing nail clippers.
- Wearing wet socks for prolonged periods of time.
- Not removing sweaty socks immediately after a workout.
- People with athlete’s feet are also more likely to develop a fungal infection of the toenails.
- If a person has a compromised immune system they may be more susceptible to a nail infection.

Signs and Symptoms of Onychomycosis
In the early stages of onychomycosis it may be difficult to detect symptoms. However, as the infection progresses symptoms become easier to spot. Those signs and symptoms include:
Discoloration of nails
The nail may take on a greenish-yellow appearance.
Thickening of the affected area
In many cases the affected area of the nail may become thicker than the rest of the nail as well as becoming discolored.
Cracking and flaking of nails
As the infection spreads and a larger section of the nail is affected it will likely become brittle, start to crack and pieces of the nail may begin to flake off.
Although the condition in its early stages is not typically painful there may be instances when cracks in the nail expose underlying tissue that becomes irritated. This is just one of the reasons for recommending treatment with the Lunula nail fungus laser treatment machine as soon as onychomycosis is detected.
The Dangers of Ignoring a Fungal Nail Infection
With all the potentially deadly diseases lurking out there your patients may think that a fungal nail infection is no big deal and decide to simply paint over the nail or not care if others see it. But ignoring onychomycosis can lead to all types of potential complications including:
Spreading of the fungus
Patients need to be aware that, if left untreated, there is a very real chance the fungal infection could spread to surrounding tissue. As a result they may develop athlete’s foot, a condition characterized by cracked, red, itchy skin that is often painful. An untreated case of fungal infection may also spread to the crotch where it takes up residence and creates what is commonly called “jock itch”.
Loss of the toenail or fingernail
Untreated onychomycosis can lead to the toenail or fingernail actually separating from the nail bed. Should this happen your patient or client may need to undergo avulsion; a procedure whereby the entire nail is removed for the good of the toe or finger. In some cases the nail may be allowed to grow back but in other, more extreme cases it may be necessary to remove the nail permanently in order to protect the surrounding tissue. This procedure, known as a “matrixectomy” intentionally destroys the base of the nail so that it won’t grow back.
Systemic nail infection
People with immune systems that have been compromised by diabetes, other health conditions or even certain types of medication need to be particularly vigilant when it comes to treating onychomycosis. If they ignore the infection there is a good chance it may spread to surrounding tissue and develop into cellulitis. Cellulitis will need to be treated with antibiotics or it may spread to the bloodstream and become a systemic problem known as “sepsis”. If left untreated sepsis can lead to life-threatening conditions including a dramatic drop in blood pressure known as “septic shock”. Septic shock can then lead to failure of the major organs and death.
In addition an untreated nail infection may cause disfigurement of the toe or finger, considerable pain when walking, swimming or even taking a shower and problems with exercising. All of this can be prevented by treatment with the Lunula nail fungus laser machine.

Prior to the development of the Lunula nail fungus laser treatment machine onychomycosis treatment was hit or miss and typically involved:
Use of Topical antifungal creams
Antifungal creams are applied to the nail and the surrounding skin and are supposed to kill the fungus as well as any other related pathogens that might have taken up residence in the infected area. However, because these creams are not able to penetrate the entirety of the nail, nor are they able to reach the tissue beneath the nail where the fungi often hide, topical antifungal creams for onychomycosis are often unsuccessful or at best only mildly successful at treating the infection. They may in some cases stop it from spreading but they leave the infected area intact. As such prior to the development of the Lunula nail fungus laser machine topical creams were often used in conjunction with…
Oral medications for nail fungus treatment
Oral medications have historically had greater success than creams dealing with fungal nail infections because they attack the infection from the inside out. However, as you are no doubt aware, this type of treatment yields uneven results with some people responding fairly well over the course of 2 to 4 months of treatment while others see little or no effect. Even in those who respond to this type of treatment it may take many months for the infection to clear completely, if it ever does. Another consideration is side effects. Oral antifungal medications can cause a variety of side effects ranging from mild to severe skin rashes to liver damage. People with any sort of liver dysfunction or those suffering from congestive heart failure should not use this type of therapy.
Surgical removal of the infected nail
As we mentioned above treatment for onychomycosis sometimes goes so far as to include surgical removal of the infected nail or nails either through avulsion or matrixectomy. This usually becomes necessary if the patient has allowed the infection to fester. The nail may be removed chemically using a urea compound or it may need to be completely removed using surgical tools. This is typically a treatment of last resort.
Lunula Nail Fungus Laser Machine
The development of the Lunula nail fungus laser machine has revolutionized the treatment of onychomycosis and provided new hope to untold numbers of people who had given up on ever being rid of this persistent fungal malady. The Lunula cold laser nail fungus laser machine delivers 2 low-powered lasers to the affected nail, nail bed and the surrounding tissue. The 2 types of laser light employed by the Lunula nail fungus laser treatment machine are:
- 405nm or “Blue” laser light – This frequency of laser light goes right after the fungal cells, attacking their outer protective walls and weakening them so that the body’s natural defense mechanisms can move in and finish them off.
- 635nm or “Red” laser light – This frequency of cold laser light stimulates and strengthens the body’s immune cells, generating a higher level of activity and making them better able to take advantage of the weakened state of the fungal cells. This frequency of cold laser light has the added benefits of improving blood flow which in turn delivers more of these emboldened immune cells to the infected areas, speeding up the healing process.

The patient should undergo weekly treatment with the Lunula nail fungus laser machine with the total number of treatments determined by the severity of the infection. Most patients should start to see real progress after just a few sessions with no side effects and no other adjunctive treatments required.
